Title: The bad and the good...
Post by: jetmex on May 19, 2011, 03:09:08 PM
Well, it's official now.  We got new ID's at work yesterday, so I now work for the evil untied airlines.  After all this time, it was hard to look at that badge and not get a little emotional.  Continental has been a good chunk of my life, hard to believe it will be completely gone soon.

On the good side, got to talk to Carl this past week.  He was passing through and was kind enough to give me a call. Though I wasn't able to help him with what he needed, we still gad a good yak.  Fubar Texas is alive and well!!  :icon_mrgreen:

And now for the ugly  :icon_lol:

So there goes Jetmex, all dooded up in brand new work duds, greasegun in hand, and starts walking out to the jet, and...

...and says, "To hell with this, I want to be a race car driver!"  So he.....

A friend of mine brightened things up considerably late last week by bringing me a keychain with a small medallion on it.  The medallion carries the old Continental meatball (I go that far back) and the message "Ex-Con".  I now wear that proudly over the untied ID... :icon_mrgreen:

Gotta be tough trying to adapt to a different work culture....I was sort of on the other side when big purple sucked up Crying Tigers....totally different mindset in the two companies...

I like the "Ex Con" idea....smart thinking on someones part....wonder how long it will take for the untied guys to make it illegal to wear it.........

Anyways, retirement can't be that far away........

Wayne, I'm actually considering doing that sooner than later.  We're losing 20k in lump sum payout at the end of the month, the pension is likely to go the same way, leaving us with a 401k that's been wiped out twice in the last six years by stock market crashes.  If I can walk out of here with enough to pay off the house and have some left over for savings, I'll blow this joint and go be a greeter at Wally World.  untied has yet after six months to tell my group if we're still going to employed by year's end, we're no longer eligible for severance pay until after the operating certificate is finalized, and we just lost a week of vacation and two holidays.  They're sure making it hard to want to stay, though I'm beginning to suspect that may be intentional.

Sorry for the rant, everyone, it's been a rough few months.

hey that's what this support group is all about....helpin' each other out. You know as soon as Nurse Ratchet returns with the meds, you will be drifting off into a warm, fuzzy sleep and won't remember any of this.........

There may be light at the end of the tunnel.  We have been "unofficially" informed that we will be kept on, they don't seem to want to divulge any of the pertinent details just yet.  So the waiting continues.  As for early retirement - don't think it will happen.  We worked out that if I left now, I'd end up with about a year and half's salary (after the taxes and penalties) between the 401k and what's left of the pension.  Which wouldn't last very long in the current economy.  It's amazing how difficult it has become to retire in this country.  Everyone gets a slice of your pie except you....
