Title: No Winner in the StettoSurgery Pool
Post by: stetto on November 18, 2011, 06:29:51 AM
Well go figure. Even I didn't win, and I have insider information! :eek5:

Had an MRI from hell last week...On my right shoulder...Looks like a couple of ligaments are detaching themselves. Doc sez (in his spookiest Vincent Price) that I could be in a sling for up to 6 months. Haven't scheduled the event yet, but 6 months is a long, long time when you have a manual transmission. But I need the arm, so what can I do?

I figured it would be another bone graft in my spine.

But it is once a year, buy your squares early!

Man you have all the luck stetto.  Wife and I be praying for ya.  I just couldnt imagine being laid up in a sling for that long, but if no other alternative, guess that is what it is.

Ugh, surgery.  Have had enough, or even more than. That probably goes or both of us. Hang in Stetto.

Nagh, it has ceased to really bother me much, I'm getting to expect it. I never did take very good care of myself, particularly when it came to overtaxing my ability to Get Stuff Done.

I need the arm, and the insurance will cover it, so the shoulder gets fixed. Then maybe another spinal graft, because that's started bothering me again... :eek5:

I'm NOT looking forward to learning how little my left arm knows about doing stuff though. I've been trying a few things with it and it ain't very smart...

Hey amigo!  Sorry to hear you're hurtin' again.  We're thinking of you here and if you want to get out of that wicked cold for a bit, come on down.  Those northern winters get deducted from your lifespan, y'know....

And answer your phone once in while fer Pete's sake!!

The pain is secondary to the fact that I can't get anything done around here without both arms, including the winterizing of the Place. I have storm windows and caulking and heat tape on the roof and outdoor furniture moving and stuff yet to do, we got an inch of snow on the ground already. It's supposed to get warmer next week, maybe even 50s (above!) by T-Day, so it's gonna be mushy out there.

Met a guy with an 8N for sale, haven't looked at it yet but he wants $1600 for it, which is $900 less than the going rate around here. He'll even deliver. I don't know what that has to do with the conversation, but I've been looking for a non-gold-plated 8N for over a year, and the guy says he put brand new rubber on it last spring, which in my mind is about $1500 of that $1600...I need my arm back so I can make some dough-re-mi.

I'll try to be closer to my phone, Jaime, honest. I miss you too.

Oh, and bad right arm and everything, I got my two deer last week. Freezer's full. :eusa_clap:

Years ago I read the Heinlein novel "Stranger in a Strange Land", whose protagonist was a miner who lost both arms in an accident.  He had a set of numbered prosthetic arms with different tool attachments, as well as a set of "normal" arms and hands.  I always thought that would be pretty cool...got a specific job to do?  Attach the #7 (photon grenade launcher) arm!!

The only problem would be - how do you get your arms back on if some bastidge takes both of them off?   :disturbed:

Yeah, he said guitar playing is out, but I just bought a brandy-new fretless bass

and it's thin and light enough that I think I may get away with playing it a lot sooner than "4 to 6 months".

And the hand that was dealt me was dealt by me, and just like the spine surgery I'm not sulking or bitter (other than when I'm clinging  ), though I get pretty frustrated when there are things need done and I'm not allowed to do them. Snow removal will be a challenge for somebody this winter. T wants me to trade my Ram in for a 4WD with a blade, but she doesn't get that two hands are needed to operate a plow.

Thanks for the good wishes everyone...I don't even see the surgeon again til Wednesday, and he may tell me there's nothing he can do. But I don't have a lot of friends rushing up to help out, so I gotta have my arm back...

You got enough toys there to keep you from doing anything productive for a long long time.....honcho, you copy??

what I meant by play the hand you're dealt...is that when we were younger, there were always choices, you could shrug it off, procrastinate, get "it" taken care of.....but as a few of us are finding out, when you get older, suddenly there are no choices left anymore..... the calendar catches up with us.

Wish nothing but the best for you Stetto, as best as the circumstances will allow........

Man, you got that right, Nony...I've been "planning" to get a couple dozen songs recorded long before now, but always had something "more important" to do...Then with what free time I had I found other things to do...Now I have a week before the surgery (watched a vid of arthroscopic shoulder surgery last night--YIKES!!) and have 6 large windows to winterize...

...I think I'll go downstairs and hit the record button. I have a spooky "apocalyptic" tune about the "fall of Rome"  :icon_wink: called 'We're Just Fine' I wanted to send to Glenn Beck, the Apocalypse Predictor in Chief...

Ouch. 5th surgey in 5 years. You guys should really consider buying in on Terrin's pool for next year.

Surgery went well, according to the doc. He found a third tear in a third tendon, and even the 15 year old injuries responded well to the knife. his prognosis is much better than the diagnosis. I'm still looking at two months in "immobilizers" and slings though.

I got a magic sauce of nova- and other- caines called a "block", numbed my arm for about 15 hours. Wore off in the night, but was nice while it lasted. Me and ice and hydrocodone are new best friends.

Ouch, but hopfully worth it. Terrin bought me "Atlas Shrugged" as a get well gift, likely because Atlas shrugged, but I can't...

This one-handed feller takes about twenty minutes to type a twelve word sentence. I'm thinking the time could be better spent.

My sister, who works in the hospital system that I get my yearly invasive procedure in told me that shoulder surgery is almost at the top of the pain scale. Considering all the operations I've had to now, I unequivocally agree...

A week before Xmas and no snow. Supposed to be 45 degs (f) today. I like it.
