Title: Does anybody bbq anymore?
Post by: balsum fractus on July 12, 2023, 06:24:26 PM
With the advent of gas bbq's, I found the food cooked thereon was not that tasty, nor were my skills apparently. I miss the old Hibachi tailgating days...food seem to taste better back then......or so my fond memories lead me to believe....

A new bbq store opened in town, and offered courses hosted by a couple of championship winning pitmasters....I bit the bullet, and signed up for an introductory course....
Best culinary decision I ever made! They showed how they chose they do things, but encouraged participants to experiment on their own......and that's what I have been doing - trying all sorts of stuff. The family loves it. My wife, who eats less than a sparrow, actually came back for seconds!! .......and it is a lot of fun. I'm not going to be any threat to Carl's smoker, but just wanted to put some taste back in the food we eat, and it is working!

Heck I am finding it hard to find time to eat before 9pm, so BBQing of any sort has been limited.

Somehow, standing over a hot grill when it's 98 degrees on my back porch is not my idea of fun.  That's more of a spring and fall thing for us, though I do know people who are absolutely die hard about grilling.  Besides, there are so many good BBQ restaurants around here that I'm willing to let someone else do the work so I can just sit back and enjoy it!

Nony,  give one of the many pellet grills on the market a try.  I have a Pit Boss that I use a lot during the summer time.  They have many different flavors of hardwood pellets depending on the protein you're cooking.

They are pretty much like Ron Popeils showtime rotisserie, you set it and forget it.

Carl, yeah they were using pellet smokers in the class. Thems pricy gadgets, though! I took the poor man's route and bought a smoker tube and a sample bag of pellets... temperature control is totally manual however, so that is one major drawback of my frugal system.......but. So far so good...... But I can see how those automatic smokers would be so much better....

Jaime......low and slow........then you hunker down to a shady spot with an icy cold beverage!! No need to stand over a flame pit! 😁

Guys, I have THREE backyard grills, magically none gas fired.

The day we moved in here I was "given permission" (it was actually part of a house buying agreement between Terrin & I) to buy a pellet grill. I spent an entire day comparing brands, models, bells, whistles,  you know, the necessaries.

I was aiming at a Pit Boss and wound up purchasing a Camp Chef SG24. Operates flawlessly...so far. A little over $500. Their customer service is phenomenal!

But I also have a custom made offset coal smoker a friend built for me that also works flawlessly, but with a babysitting component that complicates matters some days.

Then I picked up a simple Webber charcoal grill for steaks and  burgers when I need insanely hot @ 4 minutes a side.

70% of my cooking year round is done outside.

Well I don't cook, or we would starve waiting on me,  but I do eat, Vicki wanted a pit boss pellet grill so we picked one up on sale, man some good stuff comes off of it.  We did get a griddle grill this spring, been using that quite a bit too.

Well, I have succumbed to peer pressure and ordered a Pit Boss smoker...Lowes had them on sale, so made it an easy decision....I pick it up on Tuesday....

I agree, but I'm at a geographical disadvantage for that to happen.....
