Title: A new adventure
Post by: jetmex on November 17, 2025, 03:36:49 PM
Several months ago, my son in law (the Marine) invited me to go on a deer hunting trip with him and my grandson down in south Texas near the town of Carrizo Springs.  I have to admit to being a little apprehensive, since I've never done anything like that.  We got back late yesterday afternoon, and I had a fine adventure.  We hunted on a ranch owned by a real character, who bonded with me instantly because he had gone to college in El Paso. We swapped a lot of war stories and he gave me an autographed copy of one of his books.  I fell in love twice - once with the county female game warden who was 6'1" and drop dead gorgeous, and with the amazing lady who headed the housekeeping staff, who was 5'1" and drop dead gorgeous. Sunsets were epic. There were only four of us in the "camp" the entire weekend.  Grandson and I both got our first deer,  6.5 Creedmore was the weapon of choice.  The staff made me feel right at home even though I was the city slicker, the food and people were amazing, I learned a lot, and we all had a blast.  Making plans to go back next year.

Outstanding Jaime,  Sounds like it was a fun trip.  Hunting can be intimidating the 1st time, glad it went well.

ATTABOY Jaime!!

Just a tip from an age old whitetail hunter: Unless you're specifically hunting for trophies, the less antler, the better the meat.

I'm actually sitting down with a steaming bowl of venison Chilli right now!

It was a fun trip for sure.  Grandson and I both got does, son in law got a nice buck.  I'll have to remember the antler thing for the next trip.  The processor weighed our haul at 120 lbs when we dropped it off, not sure what it will end up after the bones are removed.  Looking forward to some good eating!
