Started off like any other day off her. Hotter than you know where, too hot even to be in the garage working on models. I'm getting really bored when Wally calls me and says lets go flying. Yes he was nuts, but he said this would be different, and he wasn't kidding.
After driving for quite a while, we ended up at a little airstrip just south of Alvin, Tx. The field is owned by Bruce Bohannon, who happens to hold many of the time-to-climb records for piston engine airplanes in the Exxon Flyin' Tiger, which is a highly modified RV-4 with a turbocharged Lycoming TSIO-540 engine crammed up front. And sitting out in front was Bruce himself! Wally wasn't kidding, it was different.
We flew electrics most of the afternoon, and when it starting getting dark, we sat in front of the Tiger and swapped war stories for a while. Not a bad way to spend the day, and we came out with an invitation to come back and do it again.
