Title: Wow, did some of that flying stuff.
Post by: Onepoint on October 16, 2010, 08:06:37 PM
My cousin Matt came up with the intention of flying, and by god we did, with 5 year old fuel, old batteries and long out of warranty skills.

Flew the Citabria to good effect even in the wind and then the dragon lady. Which suffered a catastrophic battery failure and went in from about 100 '. Nothing left, even the Saito 150 is toast  :'(

But did fly the Goldberg Sukhoi some, which had not been in out in several years now.

Man it felt great even if the dust and cob webs (literally in the planes case and mentally in mine) were thick enough to choke on.

He also had a micro heli that we flew a little, what a kick in the pants.  More for indoor, we flew when the breeze permitted.  It convinced me finally to go with a electric warbird from nitroplanes .com.

I have been meaning to get out and do some, but always find  other things to do, like get the house ready for winter and cut wood, fix things that are broken and other non essential things when I should be flying, so at least for today I had my priorities right.

No...really...I sincerely mean that...

I just last weekend laid hands on almost everything aircraft that I have...Putting it all away....

At least the rafters of the garage look busy... :eusa_doh:

But really man, how nice for you...

Well don't feel bad, my stuff was so buried, it took and hour to dig it all out and 2 more to make it flight worthy, more or less in the D ladys case.

Felt great, going to try one of those cheap eletrics and see if I stay with it more.

Cool!  Sorry to hear of the Dragon Lady's demise, though.

Which warbird are you going with?  Just a tip - the stock power systems on a lot of those models are adequate, but that's about all.  You can get a little more oomph with a bigger battery pack or a different prop.  I'm guessing you're at high altitude as well, so just be aware of that and all will be well.  If you're getting one with retracts, take them out to save the weight and hand launch the airplane.

Read up as well.  Electrics are a little different from slimers..... :icon_mrgreen:

I don't expect too much, but I will give one a shot for the money.  Upgrades from one of their sister sites is not too much either

31" , planning to hand launch and land in the hay.   Matts been into electrics so he is going to help with the learning curve a little.

Guess I didn't crash harden the Dragon Lady enough!! Sorry to hear of her demise......

oh well, makes room for a new one..... A bit more money, but the Parkzone T-28 is an absolute blast, and a really really nice flying airplane with power to spare (for most occasions..)

Got a little more ambitious project in mind...electrifying a 20cc gasser

....the entry fee is pretty scary, though with lots of cubic money needed for the batteries, motor and speed controller..... not sure if I will take the plunge, but I would be able to take it in the camper....

Heh, well the flying field has seen better days, I let over grow, and then it got hot, so the grass all clumped up, so not only do we deal with berms still, its like taking of on railroad tracks...with out the track part.  :sadness:

Well, Honcho, you done inspired me, so Wally and I went out and killed some air molecules yesterday.  Quite a bit of the shaking knees syndrome until the autopilot finally kicked in, then we had a ball.  Flew the Mig until I ran out of batteries, and maidened the rebuilt PBY (Nitro Planes).  The PBY is just a good flying airplane, though it is funny to see it taking off grass.  The props are counter rotating, so there's no torque, which I forgot on my first takeoff while adding right rudder.  That was an interesting sight, believe me!  I've been told it's not a good flyer off water (leaks like a sieve  :eek5: ), which is how I got this one.  She filled up on the takeoff from the pond, got a little tail heavy, went straight up and then straight down.  Take the tip floats off if you fly her from berms.... :disturbed:

I took the Corsair out as well, but for some reason, she wouldn't power up when I plugged the battery in.  Not sure what's wrong, but troubleshooting was best left for another day.

Also flew Wally's Parkzone F4F Wildcat - what a great flying airplane!  Plenty of power right out of the box, tracks like a pattern bird and loojks great in flight.  Methinks I want one....

I took the plunge and ordered the 109 last night, lets hope it gets here before it turns cold next week.

Also looking at the CRRC 26I gasser to replace my poor Saito 150.

Is that funded from the chocolate budget??  If so, wow, gee. will your system cope with a radical drop in chocolate consumption??  Have to be careful there, y'know......
