Thinking we might do a road trip down south next summer. Union Pacific is supposed to have the restored Big Boy running out of Cheyenne by then, then might swing down to Denver and catch the nhra race, and if there is some sort of ranchy place on the way, we might do a cultural exchange thing...
Lot of "if's" between now and then, but that's what we're thinking....
Heh, well I imagine there will still be some ranchy type place still around by then, inhabited by tired old people no doubt, but I suspect they'll keep the light on for ya if you happen by this way.
Gotta hand it to you though, I can't remember what I had for breakfast, and can't plan ahead in time for lunch, especially since its already supper time , its like you have a machine for a brain or something.... :disturbed:
Hmm, I have what seems to be a constant intent to get out that way. At some point we'll be moving the PuddinFace to Denver, but the timeframe doesn't want to solidify. T says I can go out there anytime I want, but she wants me to have a "new" truck to do it with. She doesn't trust my 20 year Ram, which other than gas oil and tires has hardly cost me a dime in all those years.
Let's refrain from memory commentary, please. It's a touchy subject for some of us, I just don't remember who...
Same deal for me...just replaced my 15 year old gmc with a new one, so now we can go places with out worrying about age related breakdowns....

Ha ha, speaking of age related breakdowns, it took my old Norske sawbones over 10 years to do it, but my blood pressure is finally clocking in at numbers I sported when I was 30. Now we work on the 75 pounds that won't leave....

The Mighty Purple Power Ranger is 15 years old and still going strong. I don't have any trouble taking it on road trips, but I am picky about which ones I'll take her on. The better half says I can have a new one in a few more years...
Right now, the only thing bothering me about getting old is the arthritis in my hands. I can't write or sign my name to save my life anymore. Maybe someone will come up with one of those bionic arms to fix that.
The brain damage from having been in the aviation industry for 40 years is permanent, so I'm told.... :disturbed:
Anyone closer to a gathering date proposal?
And yeah, you Texas yay-hoos, y'all come! Ride along in Carl's pig-smokin' trailer!!
I've booked the middle 2 weeks in July for a road trip......
Let me know when you are planning to be at FUBAR Hill, and i will see if i can swing it.
Mmmmmm....brisket.......
Sounds like a most excellent idea.
Still tentative, but it looks like either around July 16 th or the following week (23rd)...it will be a mid week thing, I'm afraid.......
We might even be thawed out by then!
I sure hope so!!!!!
Seems like we're itching for a road trip this year. Anytime (except Oct-Nov). Anywhere (unless it's really cold).
I'm tempted to climb into my truck and drive south till my toes can feel wet Gulf sand between them, maybe stop in Luling for a snack....
This grueling winter is going to make spontaneous travellers out of a lot of us.
Is there a gathering this summer?
I certainly hope to attend if there is...for me it all depends on how things are going with my dad.
I'm still planning to go down there, I have the middle 2 weeks of July booked off.......as I seem to recall, Wyoming gets pretty warm that time of year, so that may not have been the best timing decision that I have ever made........
You never know, could be stormy and you can watch the tornadoes, but it will be cooler. :icon_mrgreen:
Heck, I've seen it snow in Cheyenne in July. Bring a toque, Nony....
Surfboard and snowshoes??
CHANGE OF PLANS!
July did not work out for us.
But the first week in September is wide open. We leave on Sept 4th and start driving south....should be in Fubar Country by the weekend!! Hopefully, there will be some folks nearby that might need some help baling hay, or milking goats.
Heh, well its not like we are going anywhere, and who knows, it might be summer and I will have 1st cutting hay up by then.
Hopefully we can have a truck-in.....I hear some folks have some new wheels this year...
Uhg, this is the summer that never happened so far, 50 degrees and drizzle this morning, 60 for a high and intermittent showers yesterday, and I see it snowed down under 7500' last night across the state in places.
Yeah tons of rain here this week...yet up by Peace River, they are evacuating people out of the way of a large wild fire!
Hopefully things settle dow by September!
Yeah I heard that a lot of the north is under a drought.
I hope things settle down by September as well. We'll be on the road last week in August - north through Oklahoma City into Wichita, then cutting over to go through Yellowstone. Then up to the Little Big Horn, and across to Belle Fourche and Mt. Rushmore. Her concession to my interests are a stop in Omaha to see the Strategic Air Command Museum, mainly because they're sorta responsible for me being in the airplane business.
If anyone might be near any of those places, please let me know! Looks like I might have to pack the parkas for some of that snnn....sssss.......ssnssnssns.....that stuff that's only supposed to happen in winter. :disgust:
They got a pretty good (and free) Airforce exhibit museum On Ellsworth AFB in Rapid City since you are going to be going to Rushmore. http://www.sdairandspacemuseum.com/
Probably should try to swing by devils tower if you have time.
I take it you are going north to I-90? I-80 would bring you within striking range of Fubar Hill. Then on the way to Rushmore there is Agate fossil beds with... fossils of all things, but a lot of Indian artifacts too if those things are of interest. :disturbed:
Danged if I can remember the name, but there is an AFB not too far from Rushmore with a free museum...mostly SAC stuff, but they have aircraft too.....
We be heading south after Labor Day and will be somewhere in the vicinity middle of the week...if you can drag your feet and stretch out your vacation a bit....
Honcho, not sure exactly how we're going to meander up there. We set the destinations we wanted to see and the route will likely be whatever strikes us at the moment to get where we want to be with probable stops at whatever looks interesting. Pat's getting better about my visiting airplane stuff as long as she has some kind of diversion and she's always quick to find out that even when we're not looking, I can manage to find an airplane somewhere. I'm pretty sure I might be able to wander in your direction, though. Do I have a good phone number for you still?
If you have the old roster its the same one or I can PM you it if not. The problem with out west here is there is lots of stuff to see, with a lot of space in between.
Jaime.... there is the almost-famous hayfeeder museum in Eastern Wyoming, plus some nice folks to talk to, and a few animals of various species.....
Definitely worth the side trip......
Sooooo......is anyone else going to make the trip? ......or would another time be better?
Life is short, Nony. My plan is to come out.

...just don't be changin' dates on me... :disturbed:
Whooo hooo! No geoducks this time...!
Hoping the smoker-meister can make it!
Sad news (it never ends). Terrin's foster father passed away last night. She's flying to CO Springs in 2 hours.
Everything travel and otherwise is now up in the air. I bought her plane ticket with the $$ I was going to travel to WY on.
Stay tuned. It's only the end of July, there are 5 more months....
Just go pluck some more off your tree, seems that's what everyone around think we do.
So sorry to hear that Stetto...
Bad news....really bad news, I'm afraid....our out-of-country medical insurance expires in 2 days, and we have to seek out another carrier. All of them have a 90 day waiting period before coverage begins!
I don't qualify for short term travel insurance because I have had too many prescriptions in the past 12 months...(even though none of them were for anything serious, and I am perfectly healthy - it doesn't matter...)
So regretfully, I have to postpone til next year. ( the end of November probably is not the best time to visit Wyoming...). I hope this does not impact any plans that any of you had made...if so, I'm sorry.
That's too bad Nony, but yes the way this year is going, WY will be closed by Nov even if fubar hill is still open. Maybe we can all work it out next year. But the door is always open to who ever can find us!
I'm sorry to hear that, Nony. I am so needing a trip out of here myself.
Some days I gotta wonder how many shoes can drop in one year: My 83 year old mom had a stroke at church on August 4, they found a completely blocked vein in her head they had to remove. Come to find out she's been having small strokes for at least two years. Some suggest that may explain some of her behavior.
All I know is that I can't go anywhere, checking the airspace over my head for shoes every day.
Had we known, and applied 3 months ago......
I was really looking forward to the trip, and had everything planned out (so I thought) that we could sneak away for a week, and be back to welcome grandbaby #2 into the world......
Launching my road trip tomorrow morning. First leg is from Houston to Wichita, KS. Monday morning, we'll detour a bit to Lebanon KS to see the geographical center of the lower 48 states, then on to Cheyenne WY for the overnight....
Which way you going from there? Give me a call when you get into Cheyenne unless its late you can call in the morning, maybe we can meet up for a hand shake at least.
Well crud Nony, I guess I have to unload all the mesquite wood I cut and loaded on the trailer along with the pit. And I guess I can cook the two Wagyu Prime Briskets I bought and invite the neighbors over....
Dammit Carl, don't tease. :icon_razz:
That was a comedy of errors on my part this moring, Jaime called this morning saying they would delay getting out of town if we wanted to meet, so we planned for 11 am lunch at Chilis, and I would run down to Cheyenne. Well I apparently can't tell time and didn't get away until I was going to be a half hour or more late. I forgot to give Jaime my cell number, but thought no big deal, I put his in my phone last night. So I get down the road and try calling, and for some reason it didn't save the number, though it was still up on the screen, but when I hit call, it called Vicki instead and wiped Jaimes number. :eusa_doh: (That's what I called you for Stetto) In my defense I was left unsupervised.
So 45 minutes late I finally showed up . But we had a nice visit, I'm glad he waited on me. Hopefully poor Jaime is not cussing me when they roll into their motel late tonight.
Appropriately we stood in front of the handicap sign. :disturbed:
So sorry I missed your call, man. Coulda fixed ya right up. I was in the garage all day running chopsaws and other assorted and sordid powertools, getting ready for winter. Yes, winter.
Gawd what I'd pay to get over there, if I had it to pay...I do want to chat with you though, I have a project to discuss. Won't be done till next year sometime, but chatting with you Fubar types calms my brain....Besides, you have tools I might want to borrow....

Dang, Carl.....so sorry it didn't work out. There was not a lot of activity on this thread, so I assumed it would a one on one get together......
So, Honcho.....was is a good time of year to pry you away from you daily chores for a couple of days....?

Glad you two were able to meet up!
Anytime of year is a good time to give me an excuse to not work. :icon_biggrin:
Somewhere between calves and hay??
Doesn't really matter there is no days off. May is not too bad according to theory, Sept either. But anytime mid summer works, I can always put you to work. :)
Honcho, thanks again for coming down to meet us while we were there. It was a pleasure to finally meet you after all these years, and it was no trouble waiting for you. Wish I had thought of that the night before, but I had one of those senior moments. Glad I was able to reach you the next morning.
We ended up in Idaho after traveling the entire length and breadth of Wyoming, which was an interesting drive. Getting out of Wyoming the following night was on a road that went around an 11,000 foot mountain about ten times before depositing us somewhere in Montana. I shoulda stayed on the interstate.... :sadness:
Aw, just think of it as an adventure. There are days I think who ever said getting there was half the fun never drove in WY.
I think we went across Wyoming twice. In all 360 directions! But I have to admit, Yellowstone and the Devil's Tower were pretty damn cool. Little Big Horn was pretty neat, too.
Spent a lot of yesterday at the Strategic Air Command Museum outside of Omaha, Neb. Awesome place, if any of you ever get the chance to go there, do it. They have a B-36, B-45, B-47, B-52, B-17, B-29 and an Avro Vulcan on display, as well as an SR-71, a U-2 and a bunch of other stuff. I'll post some pics after we get home.
My favorite stops on this trip were the two geographical centers of the US. The center of the lower 48 is in Lebanon, KS, on a hill overlooking farm fields that stretch as far as you can see. There is a little chapel next to the marker where you can ask God why you came out there in the first place! The center which includes Alaska and Hawaii is 20 miles north of Belle Fourche, SD. That one is a two foot square concrete block in the middle of a pasture with a circular government marker in it labeled "center". The lady at the visitor center in town where the tourist marker is asked me to make sure I closed the gate so the cows didn't get out.
We're in Oklahoma City now for the RON, will be home tomorrow....
Center of the continent, yeah. I been to Redig too. Blew a radiator in that stretch of desert in 1972....
Ok, so I was looking at some of the pics we took on the trip and remembered seeing these weird fences along I80 in Wyoming west of Cheyenne. They were mainly on the south side of the road and looked a lot like the blast fences on our runup pads here at the airport. They don't really close anything in, and the length varied. So being a desert rat in a foreign country - what the hell are they for? The cows can just walk around them...... :eek5:
Ha, SNOW fence, to keep it from drifting as bad across the road or railroad depending where they are .
They also keep the geoducks from migrating....officials claim 100% success rate so far.....
They must work. Someone must have had a problem with them migrating through their place because the news said someone stole a couple hundred yards of them a couple weeks ago.
If so, someone must have left a gate open somewhere....and those sneaky critters took advantage of it. One can only hope that a couple hundred yards of fencing is enough to corral them!
🙀
Ok, so where do I get one of those fences? If they keep the sssssnnnn..............sssssssssss...............snssssnsssnnnn... out, then I might want one!! :icon_mrgreen:
Not worried about the geoducks, they probably wouldn't survive the heat down here.
They might be African Geoducks........
So.....THIS is how post counts are padded! :disturbed:

Not six weeks anymore. Saturday.
...and in case anyone is wondering (y'all likely don't remember), yes, Sheep & Pig will be in tow.... :notworthy:
That was fun, right up till the trip home. It was so good to see you & Vicki again, Buckaroo, even for the short half hour or so that it was. I'm debating whether to keep that hunnert pounds of Wyoming muck road on the truck or hose it off, sure makes the Ram look tough... :vikingsmiley:
Hopefully before fall I'll be stopping in again!
Yeah, it was great see you 2 also, just need to spend a little more time doing it next time.
