It is snowing here, but not enough to stick.  In typical southeast Texas fashion, the entire city is in full blown panic mode, schools are shutting down, and I'm watching our ops people across the room doing a beautiful meltdown as our flights stack up on the ramp and on the gates.

Uniform of the day is parka, mukluks, hoodies and shorts.  (I'm not making this up).

It's supposed to freeze tonight.  I'm not looking forward to that, since I have to drive home with all the idiots who have no idea how to deal with all of this.

Hope this comes out.  I shot this from one of our gate cameras earlier this afternoon:

Re the previous photo.  Went from that to this:

If you don't like the weather around here, just wait a minute.

Hard freeze expected tonight.

Dang, we only have a blizzard up here....

I tell ya, I shore do like my 4 wheel drive! First one I've ever owned. Going from past experience, I only need it 3 days a year but today is one of those days.... about 10" of light fluffy stuff..enough to stymie a lot of 2WD vehicles.....Lots more wind and snow overnight...

No blizzard here, but we went to -5 with a -20 windchill last night, good thing I have extra dogs for the 3 dog nights.

Ummmmmm.....anyone else want some snow??? Got lots, way more than I need........ honest.......
Today is the second day I'm really glad I have a 4x4. Streets are a mess as the plows can't keep up with the snow...I hear it is ever worse down south, and the storm is heading to the southeast with lots of Artic ("BRRRRrrrr") air following right behind it...

Hope it peters out  before it reaches you guys......

Well. got our first snow last night. :eusa_sick:

Just a trace with chilly temps, highs in the upper 20's.

Sheesh, should have gone to Terxas where it melts the next day. :eusa_think:

Powder snow falling lightly right now for us monday morning.  13 degrees now and got to -3 last night here.  Supposed to get snow over the next couple of days.  Sounds like we need an extended road trip down to either carls or jetmex's place for sayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy :eek5:  april???????? :eusa_think:  I can bring an appetite  :vikingsmiley: and a sleeping bag LOL.  And yes, if any snow falls I would shovel your sidewalks there  :eusa_wall:

:eusa_doh: :icon_idea:  HEEEEeeeeeyyyyy I could bring my snowblower down there and have everyone wonder just what the heck that particular machine is.

We got down to 17 this morning, with a balmy 28 this afternoon. By 5:00, it was 23 and dropping. Another cautious drive to work, scratch that, to gainful employment. (there is a difference, ya know)  :icon_evil:

Tuesday gonna be nice as well.  we supposed to have 45-50 mph winds, 2-4 inches of snow, and a high of 18 and go to -4 tues night.  Sounds like all of us having great weather.

Hate to look at onepoints weather.. they usually 5-10 degrees colder than we are.
Title: Re: Hey Jetmex, got your skis out
Post by: stetto on December 08, 2009, 03:26:37 AM
It has literally been dead calm here for over a week. 11 degs for high/low, light fluffy, fat flakes have been falling for three days...

Now they say tell us to expect 35-40 mile/hr winds tomorrow, and maybe another inch or two. OK kids, let's put 2 & 2 together...

11 degrees (that'd be Farhren-height, for you furriners... :icon_wink: )
A couple inches of loose snow already on the ground
Wind 'sposed to "pick up" tomorrow to a light gale
Even more loose snow

So if these things all come together at the same time, naturally all of us here know what would be the result...

Local weather says NUTHIN'.

It'll be fun to see when, IF this does come to pass, all these local buffoons start making the standard excuse that the NWS never told THEM about it. (local guys are quick to take credit for correct predictions)

One of my favorite quotes from a local weatherman on channel 6 about three years ago, after a huge squall line line came though that no on predicted and smashed up a bunch of little towns;

"Gee, I guess we didn't see THAT comin'!"

Well we have had -20 windchill for about 20+ hours now.  AT least I don;t have to try an acclimate between night and day temps, they varied about 5 degrees is all. Been snowing lightly since Sunday and have about 6" but its starting to blow around some.  Lots of fun, not supposed to get much better until about Thursday they say.

Aw shoot Ron, you just reminded me...I was going to wrap the well "house" in bales the other day...Been mighty lucky up to now. It's been below the magic donut for a week or more, but we're too far north for the last storm to give us any more than the wind off'n it.

I helped a friend build one of those temporary garages out at his farm yesterday. As cold and windy as it was we didn't do too bad, except that frost started to form on my forehead over the spots where the titanium screws are... :eek5:

At least I have a chance to find the areas that desperately need winterizing before it actually get s cold!

HA, now I can gloat, we got to like 20 for a little bit yesterday...well actually it was 20/35 i.e. 20 degrees and 35MPH, our 7 inches of snow has piled up some.  :disgust:

But at least its warming up a little which is welcome to help thaw out things so I an get a tractor started and move some snow.

More Yankee weather today - fog with visibility about 1/10 of a mile. It's raining. But it is warming up, 52 degrees and the sun is supposed to put in an appearance tomorrow.

Being from a place where we have sunshine 360 days a year, I don't know how you guys can handle six months of this winter stuff.

Well Murphy is alive and well ....too d*mned well, in fact..

Woke up to the coldest fricken fracken day of the year - 22 below with a windchill of 41 below. The basement is flooded 'cause the fricken fracken hot water tank let go in the middle of the night!!  No damage to anything fortunately - just a wet sloppy mess everywhere...and of course no hot water....but wait, it gets better! I have to endure the bitter reality when the two  blondes find out that they can't shower or wash their hair cuz there ain't no fricken fracken hot water!!!  Oh, the humanity!......................

Home Despot to the rescue at least, although I have to pay through the nose for emergency weekend service... Hopefully we will have hot water by tonight, and the icy glares from the two blondes will dissipate somewhat.....

One bright spot in this gloomy story is that tomorrow is going to be even colder! :errrr: :errrr:

That universal truth that makes everything the man's fault is something I'm planning to ask Roger to change after his election to emperor in 2012...If his wife will let me talk to him, that is... :disturbed:

I cleared the garage of untold tonnage of nail-filled demo related to the mold infested room in the basement today, just so Mama could get her car in tonight. Supposed to get Nony's weather nasty after midnight. Got it all done, the wife pulls into the drive, and. The. Garage. Door. Jammed.

First thing out of her mouth was "What did you do to it?"

:eusa_wall:

I will take note of your water heater anecdote and prepare myself for the consequences of what my dishwater blondes will say is "something I did"...

Heheh, despite the central heat the temp was a might frigid inside the nony?  :icon_biggrin:

We hit 40 something today, felt like spring. Managed to get some wood split and under the porch,  all the ice is off the stock water and all is right with the world, until the next time its cold and crappy and everything goes to hell.

Aw jeece, I learn more about this house every day.

I found out recently that there are multiple definitions for the terms dual heat and off-peak. The definition I would much prefer applied here ain't it...

We have a dual heat system, forced air propane and baseboard electric. They are "supposed to" compliment each other and make the bills easier to cover in cold winter months...I suppose that works, in theory, in a house designed with even the slightest hint of common sense...Where there are baseboard electric registers, there ARE NO VENTS FROM THE FURNACE. Oh, and vice-versa. So in this house, the two systems spend their time catching each other up...

When the off-peak is off, they meant OFF. The meters themselves just shut off. I thought that anyone with a lick of sense would have wired the system to switch to the higher priced meter and keep the house temperate, but naw, that don't make no sense, does it...

The kicker? The colder it gets, the higher the load on the system and subsequently, the longer the off peak meter is--OFF. The rooms WITHOUT vents? Terrin's office and THE ENTIRE LIVING AREA WHERE THE KIDS' ROOMS ARE.

It was 15 below yesterday morning, never got above ze-ro all day. The off peak meter and all those lovely registers were OFF from before 6 am to after 10 pm. I had to put a space heater in a bathroom where I thought the pipes were going to freeze.

I don't mind hillbilly architecture and engineering, but drunkard hillbilly architecture and engineering is going to make me go nuclear before this winter is over... :icon_evil: :icon_evil: :icon_evil:

Stetto, I'm no heat expert or anything, but I would have thought up north there where heat is truly appreciated, a combo heat system would work together like you thought,  either one separately or both together.  Seems kinda weird to have 2 totally separate systems in use like that and not overlap.

How hard would it be to run ductwork around?  And I dont know about that peak offtime either.  Seems when its cold out I would want it to work :eek5: not shut off.

Betcha ALGORE is all warm and toasty this winter in his mall sized house.

Ron, I'm waiting on the heat guy as I type. He was supposed to be here an hour ago, but then again he was supposed to be here yesterday an hour ago... :eusa_wall:

I plan to map out a duct to run through the area of the house not serviced by propane yet. I need the guy for various other sundry tasks (he plumbs too, doan' wanna get into it), but I need confirmation from a pro...

Heat/plumb guys got here...OK'd my idea but said a 6-inch duct wouldn't make the cut, have to got to at least a 12". The furnace is more than capable for the extra rooms. I may need to hawk PuddinFace to pay for it all tho...

QuoteJust think how bad it would be if we weren't experiencing Global Warming!

Gee Roger, you'd be amazed how much that topic comes up around here!

QuoteOye, amigo!  Three words for you - move to Texas!!

Uh, according to you I already live there...North part.

QuoteI have a one word solution, which is easier for us more feeble minded.  Woodstove!

Yeah...Love that wood heat...Unfortunately I'm using my wood as a shelter belt at the moment. :disturbed:

I asked the plumber side of the heat/plumb guys to check if I could cut off a cleanout that sticks out of the utility room floor right in the line of laundry worker traffic. They said they'd check...5 minutes later I heard what I swear was a jackhammer...Went down to find them jackhammering around the cleanout. :eusa_doh: They said there was something "funny" about the direction the drain went...I felt obliged to laugh hysterically (get it? Something "funny" about a drain?). Good thing they hammered it up. The main drain is broken in several places and was "patched' with black visqueen. No wonder the sump won't stop. :eusa_think:

So now we're redesigning the drain system in the basement. :eek5:

I subscribe to Honcho's theory of keepin' warm...a simple - non technical, user controlled heat on demand that works as long as you have a match... The meter guzzling furnace can stay off as long as it wants and we is still warm....

Oh, have I found a peach of a plumber!

They tore up the floor, found untold (and unexplainable) examples of drunkard hillbilly water engineering spanning the many additions and modifications to the house. Removed all but the pertinant ones, rebuilt the water main into the pressure tank, rebuilt the drains, diverted the floordrain into the sump basin and are installing the slop sink works and a sump diverter today...As of last night he told me we were at...wait for it...

$400... :eek5: I calculated, parts & labor to date to be closer to a $grand$.

I am so glad they brought out the jackhammer... 8)

Good to hear you found good help, Stetto.  The joys of home ownership...

A friend of mine retired recently and started doing home electrical work to stay busy.  I had him come out a few weeks ago to troubleshoot a ceiling fan in the guest room that hasn't worked correctly since we moved in.  Either the fan would work, or the light would work, but not both at the same time.  I replaced the switch, the fan, shuffled wires around, nothing worked.  He came in and five minutes later found an extra wire coming from a switch in the other room, apparently added because the original owner of the house had problems, too. Took him five minutes to fix it.  Found out the house wiring wasn't quite up to code while he was at it, so that may be the next home improvement project....
