Title: Swarm
Post by: stetto on June 18, 2010, 06:30:07 AM
We were smack-dab in the middle of it--But not.

Yesterday was an interesting one around here. They say at least 31 tornadoes appeared in Minnesota, a couple ripped through small towns. We were on the edge (literally) of five separate tornado warning areas. The wind, all day, blew at 30-40 mph, creating a roar that would have made it near impossible to have heard a tornado coming if there was one. But we, beyond a scant quarter-inch of rain (conservative estimate--A lot of it fell sideways), just got to watch the big storms go by from a "distance".

My folks were in the direct path of a tornado that lifted back into the clouds about five miles from their house. They live in a heavily forested area that could have been turned into a hurricane of flying tree debris. I could see the storm that hit them from my front porch. I live 20 miles from them, in very open country (like Honcho's, but greener.. :disturbed: ).

We had tornado generating thunderheads going by on two sides, the east and the west, all travelling north. Huge things that passed within a few miles, the radio blaring warnings every 5-15 minutes. I sat and watched what looked like entire storm systems twisting like water in a drain. Where's REO when you need them?

The town that was hit the worst, Wadena, is 50 miles southeast of us. They lost a lot of houses and buildings and a night or more's sleep, but no deaths or serious injuries...In town...An old woman was killed in a mobile home a few miles from town, and another man was killed in a different storm further north.

The wind continues today, again 30-40 mph. But the sun is out.

Oh, interesting side note regarding Wadena; It's the place where, when I was 8 or so, my dad took me to watch planes fly at an R/C club. First time ever, and it was the experience that initially put the bug in me...

You might lose that bet this year, at least for a while.  Been lots of rain and cool so far and the grass and weeds like it. :)

We didn't have any severe storms hit us yet, we had had a bad one go through that gave us some 3/4" hail, but it didn't last long enough to do much damage to us, the bad storms have skipped around and managed to miss us for the most part so far, but we sure been there and done that. Scottsbluff had a tornado and some baseball hail last week.  I think that the late spring weather is finally here now that spring is over.  :eusa_wall:
