Is this a great hobby, or what?

Yesterday, I spent three hours masking off the Phantom, so I could spend ten minutes painting it.  It's a foamy, mind you.  There are six thousand decals that still need to go on it (it's a Navy Phantom), which, the way I do things, will be another three days.  And there's absolutely no guarantee it will survive the first flight.  What a great hobby!!   :disturbed:

If the camera didn't fall off the truck bumper, I'll try to remember to get pictures....

I did the same with my Habu..looked real nice until this weekend when it bent a stab in the back of my van, landed upside down, and then I dropped it...all within a 2 day span.  new parts on order...spray can is ready..

I don't know about you guys, but all of mine don't fly well until they get their first doink or minor mishap under their belt.

And on these foamies, what are you using for paint?

I've had good luck with the Testor's spray paint in the little cans.  Just dust on a light coat first, let it dry, then spray heavier coats.  You can get it in the FS camo colors, too.  But always do a test shot on a piece of scrap, because not all the foam reacts the same to paint.  The Phantom is Depron and I shot it with some Krylon gray primer.  It came out ok, but I'm not as happy with it as I should have been.  The decals will cover up a lot of the rough spots, I hope..... :eusa_wall:

I also use those water based acrylics that you can get in the craft department at Wally World.  They're not expensive at all.  You can spray them from an airbrush if you thin them properly, or hand brush.  Comes out good either way.

I have a couple of the acrylic colors, but have yet to try them, do you thin them to brush too?

jetmex

Depends on how well the paint covers.  I try to get by with one coat, but some of those are pretty thick coming out of the bottle, so you have to thin them.

I want one, too!

I figured they would have the larger ones over here soon, I have been eyeing the 31" versions by Airfield at Nitroplanes.  They also have a tempest.
